Powdersville’s historic season came up just short of their first championship.The Patriots, reaching the title game for the first time in school history, fell to Beaufort 41-31 in the 3A Final from Charles W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia on Thursday night.Powdersville’s push to the final included a third round upset over the Daniel Lions, who had won 36 straight games and consecutive 3A championships, and the undefeated Clinton Red Devils in the Upper State Final.Standout senior running back Thomas Williams (a 3-star Virginia Tech commit) rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead one-yard plunge in the third quarter that gave Powdersville a 31-27 lead.But Beaufort answered immediately with a 75-yard rushing score from Kacy Fields to go back in front, before Fields added another short touchdown in the fourth quarter that helped put Powdersville away. Fields rushed for 219 yards and scored three times, including a 93-yard kickoff return as part of a 21-point second quarter for the Eagles.Two more area teams will play for state championships Friday: the 12-2 Abbeville Panthers seek their sixth 2A title in eight years against Oceanside Collegiate at 2 p.m., before Christ Church goes for their sixth championship, and first since 2014, against the undefeated Johnsonville Flashes in the 1A state final at 7 p.m.
