Sharing is caring!

Welcome back to this series talking about your personal beliefs.

Today I want to talk about the fact that some of your personal beliefs are hundreds of years old.

You might be thinking Steve, I’m only 30, I’m only 20, I’m only 50 or 60 or 70 ro whatever, how can they be hundreds of years old?

Let me explain

Where do your personal beliefs come from?

We have to ask that question as we are not born with a set of beliefs. So, we have to install beliefs from somewhere. Now as we are growing up, up to the age of 10 years old we obviously meet different people throughout our lives but usually the one constant is our caregivers. Our parents or whoever looked after us when we were younger.

Generally that’s where we got our initial beliefs from. Most of our beliefs that we have about the world and we have about ourselves are formed by the age of 7 years old. There’s a specific reason for that, but most of your beliefs you hold about your senf and the world around you have been formed by the age of 7 years.

7 YEARS OLD!

We don’t even understand the concept of what a belief is at 7 years old. But most of your personal beliefs are formed by that age. Usually from our primary caregivers. That could be from our mums, our dads, our parents, your aunty, your uncle whoever it was that mostly looked after you when you were younger. So we get a lot of our beliefs from them, a lot of our beliefs from them.

We also get them from TV, we get it from media, from reading books, online but from a very young age it’s usually from our primary caregivers and our teachers and peers etc,.

So you have to ask the question:

If you get your personal beliefs from your parents, primarily, and your primary caregivers:

Where do they get their beliefs from?

Well, they get their beliefs from their parents and their primary caregivers. And then you ask well where did they get their beliefs from and they get them from their parents and their primary caregivers. It’s passed down from generation to generation to generation. So a lot of the beliefs we have about ourselves have been passed down from generation to generation.

So, for example our parents, and their parents and their parents before them, probably went through hard economic times, through the depression, through world wars and things like that as well. Their beliefs have been passed down through that generation with the mindset of not having enough money or they’ve been rationed or forever to buy things and that’s been passed down to us as well.

This is why we as individuals have a lot of money worries and we have these money beliefs that are holding us back in life, because it’s been passed down. They’re not even your personal beliefs and yet we have them and we carry them around with us like a rucksack on our back.

We carry these beliefs that people put into that rucksack, our parents our teachers our peers, our friends, our family who have put more and more beliefs into that ruck sack.

Until finally one day you wake up and go Jeez…

These are not my beliefs, I’m gonna have to do something about it and that is why some of your personal beliefs are hundreds of years old.
