If your qualifying purchase includes a McFlurry, you might be surprised to see your frozen treat is now being served with a different utensil. Mcdonald’s is swapping out the familiar hollow spoon for a black plastic spoon that utilizes less plastic material.
R.I.P. McFlurry Spoon…
I was today years old when I learned that the clear plastic spoon they’ve been using for years also doubles as a spindle for mixing toppings into the McFlurry. Not only did I have no idea, but I’m pretty sure I tried to use the confusing-looking spoon as a straw when I purchased my first McFlurry! Unsuccessfully, of course. 😆
However, to reduce single-use plastic waste, McDonald’s is now using a reusable spindle that will be swapped out and cleaned after each use.
Reducing plastic is part of the fast food juggernaut’s goal to become more environmentally friendly. This change follows a recent announcement that McDonald’s will be completely phasing out its self-serve soda machines by 2032.
