Make each member of the family a sausage pizza pot pie that has cheesy Chicago-style deep-dish pizza vibes.
Time to get your pizza fix with this unique dinner idea!
A pizza pot pie may be the perfect food mashup we have ever heard of! Instead of chicken pot pie filling, make a delicious sausage and peppers pizza filling to pair with a chewy pizza crust!
What is a pizza pot pie?
It’s a cross between a pizza and chicken pot pie assembled in a bowl lined with cheese with the dough is placed on top. Once your pizza pot pie is baked, you flip the bowl over and it resembles a cheesy deep-dish pizza. The original is attributed to Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co. in Chicago.
Pizza pot pie recipes are a popular food trend right now and today I’m sharing a simple version to try out using store-bought dough and oven-safe bowls. As for the filling, I made ours using sausage, pepper, and onions, but you can opt for your favorite pizza toppings instead! I love how versatile this meal could be.

A unique take on pizza featuring a bowl lined with cheese, sausage filling, topped with pizza crust. Once flipped it resembles a deep dish pizza!
1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease four 2 cup oven-safe bowls on the inside and around the outside.
2
In a large skillet on the stove, crumble sausage and sautee peppers, onion, and garlic together on medium heat until cooked. Drain off any access grease.
3
Pour in the marinara sauce and stir. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper to taste.
4
Add 3 slices of cheese to the inside of each bowl. I found that slicing them in half first made it easier to overlap and assemble them evenly. Fill the bowls with the sausage filling.
5
Divide the pizza dough into four pieces and stretch the dough around the top of each bowl. Be sure there is a little hanging over and gently seal with your fingers around the edges. Place the bowls on a sheet pan. Bake for around 25-30 minutes until the dough is cooked and browned. When you tap on the top they should sound hollow.
6
Remove the pies from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes. Invert each pot pie on a plate. Use a knife to loosen the edges, and pull up on the bowls to lift them off. Enjoy!

Extra tips for making this pizza pot pie recipe:
- You’ll need oven-safe bowls to make your pot pies. I used 2 cup glass Pyrex bowls and that size worked well.
- Don’t skip the step of spraying the inside and outside of your oven-safe bowls with nonstick spray. It will make it easier to flip over after baking and prevent sticking.
- You can usually pick up a batch of pizza dough at your local grocery store. I ran into my local pizza takeout restaurant and grabbed a ball of fresh dough for just $3, and we love their crust! We use this shortcut when using our pizza oven at home, and love it!
What a fun take on pizza!
We really enjoyed this meal. I was a little intimidated by the bowl flipping at first, but it was simple.
You could really get into this pot pie making and prepare everything homemade from the marinara sauce to the crust if you’d like. I wanted to give it a run through first so see if it would work out. I have also seen a large version made in a deep souffle dish, but the smaller ones seem a little more manageable.
