Stolen gun found in bookbag at Tanglewood Middle School

A 15-year-old student at a Greenville County, South Carolina, middle school has been charged after having a stolen gun in his book bag, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said around 9 a.m. Thursday, the school resource officer at Tanglewood Middle School was made aware of an anonymous tip on the tip line about a student with a gun. Deputies and school staff made contact with the student, and a stolen, unloaded handgun was located in a backpack the student was possessing, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies have not received any information that any threats were made, and the motive for why the student was in possession of a gun was not immediately clear. The teenager is facing charges for possessing a firearm on school grounds and will be taken to the juvenile detention facility in Columbia.Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis released the following statement: “While I’m saddened to hear a child felt the need to possess of a gun at school, I am thankful for the swift and collaborative actions taken by the community for calling in with the tip, the school staff for their outstanding communication and the deputies for quickly taking action to ensure the safety of our children. Both the GCSO and the Greenville County School District share the common interest in fostering a community where our students are safe and protected.”
