Hebrew University suspends professor who accused Israel of Gaza genocide and cast doubt on Hamas sexual violence.

The Hebrew University has suspended Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian from the Faculty of Law following a series of inflammatory statements and actions, the university announced.

Shalhoub-Kevorkian, known for her criticism of Israel and Zionism, was interviewed by Channel 14 where she accused Israel of genocide in Gaza and questioned the rapes and other atrocities committed by Hamas during the October 7 events.

Despite prior requests for her resignation, the university decided to suspend Shalhoub-Kevorkian after her recent statements and ongoing pressure from the academic community and lawmakers.

In a statement, the Hebrew University expressed its rejection of Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s statements and emphasized its pride in being an Israeli, public, and Zionist institution.

Shalhoub-Kevorkian holds the Lawrence D. Biele Chair in Law at the Faculty of Law-Institute of Criminology at the Hebrew University, where she specializes in trauma, state crimes and criminology, surveillance, gender violence, law, and society, according to her faculty page.
