Golden retriever meetup: ‘Golden Strong’ walk held in honor of Boston Marathon dog Spencer

Dozens of golden retriever owners brought their dogs to Boston Common on Sunday for a meetup held to honor the memory of Spencer, the official Boston Marathon dog.The group MA Golden Meetups organized the event, which included a “Golden Strong” walk and a meet-and-greet with Boston Marathon runners.Spencer became an iconic symbol of the Boston Marathon for holding a flag reading “Boston Strong” along the marathon route for nine years, greeting thousands of runners as they passed.Spencer had multiple bouts with cancer and after another cancer was detected over the winter of 2022-23, his owners came to face the realization that he would not make it to the 127th running of the race. Spencer died on Feb. 17, 2023, at the age of 13.Spencer’s niece, his family’s 11-year-old golden retriever named Penny, died days later after a veterinarian discovered she was suffering from internal bleeding and that she had tumors on her liver and spleen.Sunday’s meetup was held as a way for golden retriever owners to take a stand against canine cancer. MA Golden Meetups also sold Golden Strong bandanas for dogs with 20% of proceeds donated to Spencer and Penny’s fundraiser for the Morris Animal Foundation’s hemangiosarcoma and canine cancer research.Two weeks ago, a statue of Spencer was unveiled in Ashland, near his usual spot along the Boston Marathon route near Ashland State Park.
